Metal Gear and The Changing Audience for Games

feature_image_large-1.jpgMuch like Snake, I'm getting old. There's not getting away from it. There's a weird gray streak of hair sprouting out of the middle of my head, my beard is way past "salt and pepper" and my taste in games is changing. My tolerance for nonsensical bullshit and over complicated, fun-sapping ridiculousness is virtually zero, but my curiosity for anything game-related is still high. This past week has been particularly educational, as we've seen the audience of What They Play respond to a wide variety of stories in different ways, and we've seen the dynamics of our traffic change quite considerably. Although Metal Gear Solid 4 is undoubtedly the most hyped game of the week, it hasn't really been something that much of our audience (parents) has cared for. Sure, we've run big promos on the homepage, and supplemented it with a parents' guide...but the indifference is right there for us to see in the Google Analytics data. It's doing OK, but it doesn't compare to what I'd expect to see if I were looking at 1UP's traffic, or IGN's, or Gamespot's.

So what has done well? Well, coverage of the Cartoon Network's franchise Ben 10 has been huge. It's always huge for us. It blows me away. There are apparently a lot of kids out there that love Ben 10, and there are a lot of parents that haven't the foggiest idea what it's all about. Me included. So we put together some more coverage, and it's been going crazy. Similarly, we've found that both Webkinz and Club Penguin still generate an enormous amount of interest from parents. Proof positive, I guess, that the motivation behind launching the site in the first place was well-founded. We just posted our Dragon Ball Z: Burst Limit coverage too, and it's already picking up nicely.

feature_image_large.jpgThe lesson? I'm not sure yet, but there's certainly plenty of evidence that supports the notion that gaming is getting broader and broader in terms of its appeal, and that the place of the "core" gamer in the grand scheme of things is almost certainly diminishing.

I'm looking forward to seeing the NPD numbers for June, as it'll be the clearest indication yet of just how significant "enthusiast" spending power still is. Is Metal Gear Solid 4 appearing at the wrong time in the PS3's life to become a pop culture phenomenon? Or will it sell to core PlayStation fanboys, and no one else? When we polled people a year ago and asked "what game will make you buy a PS3?" the answer was almost unanimously "Metal Gears Solid 4" - but now that it's a year later, is that still true? My instincts tell me now that MGS4 will comfortably sell a million units this month...but that it probably (sadly) won't move the needle on PlayStation hardware. I'm old enough and gray enough to have been a fan of the franchise for a long time (and by fan, I mean "someone that likes it," not raving rabid crazy defend-it-at-all-costs fanboy lunatic) but as I sit here all alone in the LAX departure lounge collecting my thoughts on the day the "final" (shyeah, right) game comes out, I'm really not feeling the itch to stop off at Best Buy on the way home. Younger fans may be more excited, but let's face it, a lot of Snake's longest-standing fans are getting on a bit. I'm not the only gamer I know that just not "feeling it" for MGS4. It's not a system bias, or elitism or snobbery, I think it's just being tired of what is, let's face it, a beautifully refined development of the same old thing. I'm just not sure I have the patience any more to give a crap why there's a boss that pukes bees, or a solider that craps himself, or a robotic tentacled she-beast that pisses fire while burping the pledge of allegiance.

Is this just me? Am I the only one? Am I just being a cynical old fart who's just grumpy and tired? Maybe I should trying, y'know, actually playing the game, and then returning to this. How late does Best Buy stay open?

10pm regarding the Best Buy question.

You know, I don't know. Honestly, I never really knew what would make me buy a PS3. I'll put it this way, when I buy a PS3 I will buy MGS4. But I probably won't be buying a PS3 until Little Big Planet is available.

I'm interested to her about the metrics of your site. I know that my nephew is insane for Big10. It seems to be that type of property that is going to perfectly hit the type of boys that are going to grow up interested in video games.

I might check out your site's coverage of it.

I'm glad that I'm not the only "ol' timer" that's sharing the same sentiments. Yeah, my copy of MGS4 is "in the mail" but I won't realistically get around to it until the mood strikes me...God knows when that'll be.

I think it's unrealistic to expect for yourself to hold onto that same wide-eyed fascination of anything for longer then is natural. Will people like us continue to love and appreciate games? Of course. However, as with all of the relationships that we share in life, they must evolve and mature if they're to withstand the winds.

For example, I'm personally struggling with my own feelings towards games recently. Right now I'm trying to figure out the best way to express my dissatisfaction of Silent Hill 2 during our the next Squadron of Shame "Squadcast" without sounding like a freakin' grump. As much as I enjoy doing the show, I can't help but feel like the group's "curmudgeon", an unwelcome title that I'm not interested in lugging around.

So what I can (and will) do instead of being a crabby-ass is focus on the things that I have been enjoying the most about games lately...sharing them with my family. I'm encouraged how the video game industry is expanding and growing with every new generation and I've found the fruits to be sweet, indeed. As long as I focus on what is now and what can be, the role of "ol' timer" is one that I'll wear with pride..."curmudgeon" be damned.

I'm the youngest person commenting on this blog (I know the two people above me), but I feel like an "old" gamer these days. Probably because I started playing games before I can remember doing so(really, I was too young to form any real memories), and also because of the current gaming climate. Right now I find myself moving away from console titles and playing my DS and PSP much more than I used to. Console gaming has sort of fallen to the tweens I hate, hate, hate on Xbox Live. I also find my tolerance for RPGs teetering on the edge of a very high cliff.

I guess I feel like the gaming industry hasn't grown up with me. It's like the entire thing is frozen in this period where games we're aimed at teens and younger kids, and though a few games break the mold, it just seems like most games, casual and hardcore both (for lack of any better terms) just don't appeal to the adult side of me. It doesn't help that most of the online gaming community (thanks to the wonderful powers of the internet) are a bunch of jerks.

I might just go *gasp* read a book. Or better yet, play Okami again. Or Viva Pinata, eh John? As for MGS, I never really got into it, but I plan to do so while everyone else is finishing Snake's final tale.

MGS 4 is more of a gamers game, and the children of your site visitors are not interested in an over the top tactical espionage.

MGS 4 also feels more like an war based anime than a game...

I am a hardcore gamer, there's no getting around it, but something just seems to be different this time, different in a way that leaves me feeling unsettled.

I was hyped for metal gear 3, I get excited about any game that promises dirt and wonky controlls; but I just feel as if metal gear 4 has done something wrong. Because about this game, I can't even fake excitement.

I don't have a PS3, so it doesn't really matter anyway, but I feel like this should give me some sort of, "Ohh, I wish I had a PS3, maybe I should get one for this game" but then when looking at a game like littlebigplanet, I do feel that burn for, "God, I just need to play this game"

So I have no idea what, but something has gone wrong with this launch.

I'm with you on MGS. Picked it up a day and a half after release because I couldn't be bothered to hurry on downtown. Have played it, and while I'm impressed by the visual style (probably one of the best PS3 titles I've seen), I'm just fed up with the nonsense story and indeterminable cut scenes. My last great hope for the PS3 is Heavy Rain - hoping we see more at E3.

As I am getting older as well, I appreciate MGS4 for at least attempting to wrap up its story. It is ridiculous to think that this is actually the sixth official entry into the series that started at least 15 years ago, and has for the most part, continually ended on a cliffhanger, perhaps more for commerce and self-longevity than anything else. It is almost a relief for me and my OCD habits to acknowledge that Kojima firmly declares this to be his last MGS game, and it truly does wrap everything up in a way that makes me want to believe him. Its an amicable split where both he and I can leave the franchise and feel like even if there are future games, the whimsical story we have come to know has finally reached its end and we can both move on.

For me, I've accepted that I'm a game-snob.

When my brother learned every in and out of how to create music, he began to hate everything. The magic was gone because he saw the smoke and mirrors.

As I grew my skill in film coloring and editing, the magic disappeared for me as well.

In our respective worlds, we began to hate everything we took in. I can't stand most films, simply because I see through them. I can't simply be entertained by films anymore - if my eye catches one frame taht' is slightly off, or a mis cut of film - i'm done. The magic is gone. My brother can't listen to anything that wasn't created perfectly. He's limited musically to classic, jazz, and very little rock and techno.

But, the stuff that we do enjoy? It's brilliant. Sweeney Todd, for example, was a spot on film. Brilliantly done from beginning to end. It was perfect. The same goes for the films I enjoy to watch. The music my brother enjoys? Every bit of it is from talented, progressive artists. We're both snobs. And it's the nature of the beast. Once you understand the trick, the magician isn't as interesting anymore.

Metal Gear isn't quite as interesting since we've played it 3 times before (or more, if we bought the extra editions). The new Smash Brothers? Played it twice. Halo? Don't even get me started. So how do I personally handle this? How can I possibly be excited about every moment of MGS4? Because it's not a game, and it's not the same ol Metal Gear.

It's an interactive movie. Knock the cutscenes as much as you want - they are brilliant. The dialogue is fantastic. The voiceacting is perfect. The gameplay between cutscenes is just enough to get you into what's happening. It keeps you playing. It keeps you watching.

Really, the reason I'm able to enjoy it is because it is the genre refined to a fine point. It's the perfect Metal Gear. And that, to me, is something to be excited about.
