Do game reviews help you?

I sort of got my panties in a bunch this week while reading through all the reviews of the latest games. Now that I'm outside the processes of the "machine" and looking on from the outside, it's a very different experience to be looking at coverage of games. It's inevitable that I'll feel this way every Q4 moving forward, but at the moment I'm super aware of the inconsistencies that seem markedly apparent in a lot of the "criticism" of games. I do the obnoxious air quotes thing there, because honestly, that's part of the problem. Without veering too far into games criticism wankery – that's just annoying to read – the core problem (for me) while reading the reviews of things like Rock Band 2, and Star Wars: The Force Unleashed is not that I necessarily disagree with the opinions voiced (I do, but that's irrelevant) it's that the coverage is neither criticism, nor buying advice. Because it aspires to be both, ultimately it is neither, and what we get instead are subjective little microcosms of opinion. Less and less, we see content edited within the context of the outlet in which it lives, and the result is that we see the same arguments used to reinforce contradictory points. Reviews editors are increasingly just editing individual reviews, and are not editing their reviews sections. Otherwise, we wouldn't constantly see these contradictions.

To paraphrase:

"This game is just like this other game, and that makes it awesome."

"This game is just like this other game, and that makes it terrible."

Today on What They Play, we posted a story about this in the context of how it impacts people that aren't hardcore gamers. Given that parents, by and large, are not avid followers of video games, and only look for content (if at all) when a purchase is about to be made, we pondered whether the editorial reviews available are actually of any use. Personally, my feeling is that no, they aren't. Why? Because more often than not, decisions about entertainment are made outside of the critical process. People go to see bad movies. They watch crappy TV shows. They play games that aren't necessarily well received. We are polling our audience on the subject right now, so if you have an opinion on the subject please provide a comment on the story, or at least click on the poll that we have.

As these things tend to do, the musings suddenly took on a life of their own. After Twittering something of my usual drivel-level standard, and this in turn being sucked into my Facebook status, I found that discussion on this subject started turning up in Wall responses. First, good friend and current LucasArts employee Brooks Brown chipped in noting that "reviewers seem to not enjoy games like they should," and was soon joined by Robert Ashley (whose work I respect immensely, and have since the OPM and early 1UP days when I first met him) who noted, "The fact that critics who play 40 or 50 games a year don’t feel the same way about games as the average consumer shouldn’t be a shock. It’s not that they’ve lost touch with the spirit of gaming. It’s that experience drives them toward novel and away from familiar."

Shawn "Shawnimal" Smith (whose Ninjatown game comes out on Nintendo DS next month) then hit the nail on the head with, "this is obviously a complicated issue made worse by reviewers who place themselves on a pedestal without ever really doing the work needed to be taken seriously. The moniker 'Critic' in any form shouldn't be taken lightly, and those of you out there who truly are 'Video Game Critics', and take that title seriously (AND do all of the years of research and constant diligence that comes with it) should be a resource for gamers who want to dig deeper. But then where does that leave the average consumer who simply wants to know if they should buy a game or not? Should reviewers 'dumb down' or should consumers 'smart up'?"

I'm not sure if I've changed or the business has, but I'm not reading reviews like I used to. When I was a kid I would read PC Gamer and CGW cover to cover, including reviews of games that could not possibly interest me. I enjoyed reading reviews.

I don't anymore, and find myself barely reading them at all. In the first place, I'm not really looking for purchase decisions anymore because I've reached a point where there are very few games that interest me at the $50 and $60 price point. I have a large Pile of Shame and there's a lot of great older games that are available at discount.

And a lot of time it's those older games that get me more excited because the feature-preview-review cycle is long dead and gone, and the game has to stand on its own merits. Most games don't outlive their own hype, and I want to check out those few that do. That's where my time is best spent.

Related to that is what I think has really helped kill the importance of reviews. The noise level in the gaming press is deafening, and by the time a major game comes up for review I no longer care. I have skimmed one review of Spore at this point, and cannot bring myself to read any others. The thought of reading another paragraph about Rock Band or Guitar Hero sends me swiftly to the Jameson bottle.

When I was young, reading about games wasn't so exhausting. I read reviews because there were a lot of games I hadn't yet heard about, and while most of them were poor, sometimes there were gems that just came out of nowhere. Now, it feels like I've heard and read all there is to say about a game before the first review goes up.

Which brings me to one last point. Ultimately this industry is about entertaining people. Games need to be entertaining, and so do the people writing about them. Whether the goal is criticism or purchasing advice, the act of reading a review should be rewarding in itself. As things stand now, that is rarely the case.

It's also worth remembering that the average game buyer only buys a handful of games every year, and rarely finishes a game. They probably choose a game from looking at them on the shelves, because of marketing or word of mouth rather than reviews. Or because they liked the film. I try and keep up with the latest reviews, but stick to two or three sites whose opinion I trust. But ultimately you know that it's one person's viewpoint and is always going to be subjective.

I'm personally struggling with the concept of reviews/criticism, as I'm trying to write a blog around the Rough Guide to Videogames. I don't label myself as a critic any more than a games journalist, simply a writer on games, retrospectively. I don't write about any games that I wouldn't recommend someone buy.

As to how useful something like the Rough Guide to Videogames is, I don't know - I hope it is. Because writing about games once the initial furore has worn off, when release deadlines are irrelevant, it's easier to evaluate a game on its own terms.

Reviews are just very bad information sources.

For example, I missed out on the first ps2 balders gates release and didn't discovering it until about two years back now.

Since I really liked it, I seem to mostly play through coop games with my wife now so thats the main selling point. I instantly went out and looked for anything else similar that may have been made after it that I also missed.

The result was hitting lots of reviews devoid of any of the information I was looking for trying hard to piece together from what they did say if these games where in any way related to what I wanted.

What seems strange here is my first instinct to describe a game is to point out its heritage, mention the games that it is similar too, games the developer may even have created and borrow features from. This is information that any reviewer should be able to provided in a reasonably objective way, but is actually hard to find.

Recent similar case in point I pretty much ignored too human right up to the point that I saw a bad review complaining how it was a crappy diablo clone, the opinion was ignored but they accidentally included information in their insult that caused me to check it out.

I haven't bought a game on the back of a review for years. Actually, I don't think I've ever bought a game on the back of a review, because I didn't have a console until I knew enough about games via emulation to really have an idea of who'll do me right.

I tend to buy games purely on the strength of whether I think they'll have something to interest me. There is a Parish modifier i.e. I hang out at Jeremy Parish's forum, and buzz for games there will influence my buying behaviour, but that's only in the last year or so.

That's putting aside the fact that I can count the amount of reviews that have actually told me something interesting about the game on one hand.

I think it really depends on the audience. I think for enthusiasts reviews are very useful, because they are the sort of people who tend follow the online space really closely. How else did Braid and Castle Crashers become such a huge hits? Their success was a creature of the critical community getting behind them. It seems also to vary from platform to platform; Xbox is the kind of platform where that kind of word-of-mouth can be helpful. (Unlike the wii for some reason... no amount of acclaim saved boom blox or zack and wiki) So it's not like good or bad reviews don't matter but it seems to be a thing that's totally relative to audience. This is probably the same with movies as well, where there is just this large segment of the audience that doesn't take reviews into account when making decisions about entertainment. (I mean, don't your kids drag you to things?)

As for the low standards of criticism I have to agree. I think one of the basic problems is that there's no consensus about the value of innovation, particularly with respect to gameplay. (this is something that comes from the editorial level, I gather) Like ashley points out, reviewers are more hungry for new ideas and are less tolerant of middling genre exercises than the average consumer. (I think this comes with being a critic rather than a consumer advocate) Like if you haven't played tony hawk in 6 years you're going to be more tolerant of the umpteenth retread, because it's new to you. But that doesn't make it a good game. It also seems that the average consumer is more tolerant of shoddy game design than the average critic.

anwyays I wrote about this on my blog today, what I wrote falls into the games crit wankery category but you should check it out if you're interested.

The only reviews I trust anymore are written by editors that I feel like I've come to "know." Well, not "know," really, but at the very least "understand."

1up Yours, GFW Radio, Gamers with Jobs... those podcasts shine a huge spotlight on the personalities of the writers. You get this expanded view of that person's likes and dislikes, genre preferences, typical play style, and all sorts of wierd specific things that just accumulate in your head about a specific writer.

Example:

So, I've listened to a bunch of Conference Call podcasts. I've come to see that Julian Murdoch and I have tend to play the same games, and not only that, but we play them the same way. So, when he reviews a game, I'm going to take it more seriously and I am more likely to purchase a game he says he enjoys. And, luckily, it works the other way. I think Garnett is great, I do, but we don't play the same games. And that's fine. But since I listen to every 1up Yours, I treat every review Garnett does the exact same way I treat Julian's. I will at least have a better understanding of why he didn't like it, and I can tell where I would disagree. It's almost (trying to stress the word almost) like I can have a mental arguement with either of them after I read a review and play the same game myself.

I would say that, at least for hardcore gamers, really getting to know an editor makes the review better. For casual gamers? Hell, I don't know, a couple paragraph review that acts more like a buying guide than a critique should be fine.

Isn't there room for both?
